Sophie Wedell studied modern and Baroque violin with Anke Dill, Ulf Schneider and Anne Röhrig in Stuttgart and Hannover, Germany, where she completed her Master’s degree in 2016. Subsequently she decided to follow her interest in Early Music and moved to the Netherlands, where she is currently studying with Kati Debretzeni and Walter Reiter. Further inspiration came from Mauricio Fuks, Daniel Sepec, Eberhardt Feltz, François Fernandez and Enrico Gatti. Her passion for chamber music brought her to play in various ensemble formations. From 2011 to 2015 she was a founding member of the string trio Trio Amun. In 2012, the trio received the Special Prize in the International String Trio Competition Munich, and in 2014, they were finalists of the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb. In 2013 she held a scholarship from the chamber music festival “Heidelberger Frühling” where she performed Jörg Widmann’s “Oktett” together with the composer.

Sophie believes that every era has brought forth amazing music that is worth listening to. Hence she has always been an avid player of contemporary music, taking part in an exchange program of the composition classes of Tel Aviv and Stuttgart universities, as well as performing in the ECLAT Festival, Stuttgart, in 2011. In 2013 she performed and recorded the European premiere of Elliot Carter’s string trio (2011) with Trio Amun. Sophie is a (founding) member of ensemble Reflektor and of Orchester im Treppenhaus; both ensembles aim for bold performance concepts off the beaten track. She is a member of the Orchestra of the 18th century and plays regularly with various free groups such as the northern Germany based ensemble la Festa Musicale.
